Listorious Interview

Have you ever unfollowed someone? Who and why?

Ppl quoting song lyrics. Tweeting in languages I cannot read. Those who use foul language gratuitously and without cleverness.

Anastasia M. Ashman in response to Listorious

What's your favorite Twitter app?

Tweetie keeps me happy on the road, but when Tweetdeck works (damn you, Mac OS!) I feel like the Wizard of Oz with my big ol' dashboard

Anastasia M. Ashman in response to Listorious

140 characters of advice for a new user?

Give it time. Don't believe ppl who tell you it's worthless, or vain. Explore your interests and share your best. Learn how it works.

Anastasia M. Ashman in response to Listorious

What's the most interesting connection you've made through Twitter?

meeting @mymarrakesh, relative of Lady Mary Montague writer of 18th c. Turkish Embassy Letters from which my own Expat Harem book springs

Anastasia M. Ashman in response to Listorious

Who do you wish had a Twitter feed but doesn't?

Salman Rushdie -- the man is strictly Facebook

Anastasia M. Ashman in response to Listorious

Is there someone you want to follow you who doesn't already? If so, who?

no. if there were I'd try connecting on his/her plane and points of interest. ultimately tho I'd only want the follow if they did

Anastasia M. Ashman in response to Listorious

Ever get called out for tweeting too much?

Probably, but I've wiped it from my mind. Oh some days I go too far but luckily I tweet in a time zone most ppl sleep through.

Anastasia M. Ashman in response to Listorious

What was the funniest trend you've seen?

I enjoyed the combination of mean-spirited high-mindedness of the #bonofacts meme

Anastasia M. Ashman in response to Listorious

How do you use Twitter in your professional life?

To attend conferences, find and meet my pro peers, stay up to date on my industry's advances, share my resources with others

Anastasia M. Ashman in response to Listorious

What question are we not asking here that we should?

What category do you *wish* you'd been nominated for? [cultural institution is fab but who wants to go up against a museum or a zoo?]

Anastasia M. Ashman in response to Listorious

What inspires you to tweet?

for a far-flung expat like me it can be a chance to bump into kindred ppl in the cosmos, or share the ideas I'm revolving

Anastasia M. Ashman in response to Listorious

How do you make your tweets unique?

I try to make sure they cleave to who I am: woman writer, cultural creative, global citizen, identity adventurer, Berkeley expat, Turkophile

Anastasia M. Ashman in response to Listorious

Has Twitter changed your life? If yes, how?

Living outside USA for 11 years it's helped me find a new footing in the world. I've gone 'back to school' in topics that truly interest me

Anastasia M. Ashman in response to Listorious

What are six things you could never do without?

hot water. lavender oil. Internet access. friends with and without fur. a good view from my home. enough sleep.

Anastasia M. Ashman in response to Listorious

Terms you wish would start trending on Twitter right now?

Forward-thinking. World peace. Books. Vipassana. Istanbul2010 (it's a European capital of culture and I'm hosting a year-long blog carnival).

Anastasia M. Ashman in response to Listorious

Why'd you start tweeting?

At breakfast on a rocky cliff overlooking the Aegean, as swallows dipped and hunted, to become visible and join the wider whirl.

Anastasia M. Ashman in response to Listorious

Hashtag you created that you wish everyone used?

ppl don't use hashtags because they're created, they use them because they're useful. i'd to see like #expatharem more often, that's a goal

Anastasia M. Ashman in response to Listorious

What feature should Twitter add?

We should be able to nest other people's lists in our own, one click. Ppl on our lists should be able to DM us. Encrypted DMs.

Anastasia M. Ashman in response to Listorious

What are some big Twitter faux pas?

Negativity without context, or more than one negative tweet per hundred. Telling ppl you want to DM them but they're not following you.

Anastasia M. Ashman in response to Listorious

What are some words or phrases you refuse to shorten for brevity?

Maybe I'd shorten even more if I thought ppl would know what I mean. Can't risk being unintelligible. Also, I seriously like 25cent words.

Anastasia M. Ashman in response to Listorious

Who do you admire most for his or her use of Twitter?

the writer extraordinaire Susan "Orchid Thief" Orlean, who manages to mix personal with professional content, be captivating and nonceleb

Anastasia M. Ashman in response to Listorious

What's your best tweet?

momentary ideas that many ppl react to in delight: e.g. mesh coat covered with climbing kittens, a non-Cruella de Vil design

Anastasia M. Ashman in response to Listorious

How long can you go without a tweet?

A day or so. I don't really know I haven't been tested.
