By modern, I assume you mean folks who have been recording in the past 20 years? My favorite modern singer is probably Al Jarreau, followed closely by Kurt Elling. I love Manhattan Transfer and New York Voices – and the projects that those singers have done as soloists as well. If you’ve never heard of Nancy King, you should definitely check her out. Brits Claire Martin and Ian Shaw have been faves for awhile. I recently discovered Grammy-nominated Gregory Porter, who is fabulous. I really admire Tierney Sutton, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Dianne Reeves, and Holly Cole. I recently discovered Adam Dunning (on Twitter!), an Australian who does faithful renditions of bossa nova tunes. While not jazz, I highly recommend Angelique Kidjo and Zap Mama for world beat.
