Listorious Interview

Ray, what is your opinion of the No Child Left Behind Act? Do you feel that special needs children are adversly affected by the law?

I think the law is a failure, and all public school children are adversely affected.

The emphasis on quantitative standards is stupid, and fails to take into account how children learn.

I think it is all part of a plot to privatize education, and to make money for the corporations that operate so called "charter schools" which should really be named "corporate for-profit schools".

The future of our country depends on education of our children, which in turn depends on a robust public school system.

The people making these laws are rich people whose children attend private school.

If we outlawed private school, we would see a marked improvement in the quality of public education.

I am heartsick over it.

Ray! Did you know u are #3 of the top 140 tweeters on Listorious! Congratulations! Do u trust the people u Tweet w/on Twitter?

1. Well all that statistic means is that I am #3 in the number of Listorious-submitted lists which have named me. Many other people are on more Twitter lists than I. In fact if you look down the list, you'll see people like Anita Nelson, Guy Kawasaki, Chris Brogan, and Reg Saddler, who have many more followers than I, and are named to many more Twitter lists than I. The difference is that a lower percentage of the lists naming them have been submitted to Listorious.

2. I trust some of the people I tweet with; and do not know most of the people well enough to say that. In fact, many people with whom I tweet are anonymous, and I find it hard to trust people who are anonymous.

RayBeckerman in response to Vicki Nikolaidis

Ray, amazing tweets. Insightful and sincere, thank you. Can I ask, what was your main driver to start using twitter as you do?

The realization that Twitter was a great place to
(a) find the news that doesn't make it into the mass media (b) find the history that doesn't make it into the history books (c) find, and organize with, the people who care about making the world a better place and (d) provide a voice for the voiceless.

RayBeckerman in response to Chris Redmond

Who do you wish had a Twitter feed but doesn't?

Rahm Emanuel. So I could give him a piece of my mind.

RayBeckerman in response to Listorious

Has Twitter changed your life? If yes, how?

Yes. Cut deeply into my working time. Made me a much more knowledgeable person. Made me a lot of new friends.

RayBeckerman in response to Listorious

How do you make your tweets unique?

I don't worry about that. I worry about good information.

RayBeckerman in response to Listorious

Why'd you start tweeting?

I started to tweet about legal issues, but I've gone way beyond that. Now it's more about friendship and learning

RayBeckerman in response to Listorious

What are six things you could never do without?

I'm not like that. I get by with what I've got.

RayBeckerman in response to Listorious

What was the funniest trend you've seen?

#youmightbecanadian by @CandyWWGM

RayBeckerman in response to Listorious

Terms you wish would start trending on Twitter right now?

#stopnelson #stopstupak #hcr #mtr #publicoption #bagua

RayBeckerman in response to Listorious

What feature should Twitter add?

Genuine traditional retweet

RayBeckerman in response to Listorious

Hashtag you created that you wish everyone used?

I've only really created one, but I don't wish everyone used it: #youmightbeaddictedtotwitter

RayBeckerman in response to Listorious

What are some big Twitter faux pas?

Talking at rather than to people; being too self promotional; being selfish.

RayBeckerman in response to Listorious

Who do you admire most for his or her use of Twitter?

@BuzzEdition She put the "social" in "social media"

RayBeckerman in response to Listorious

Have you ever unfollowed someone? Who and why?

Yes. I wouldn't say who. Different reasons. Commercialness, selfishness, rightwing politics, nuttiness, irritating me

RayBeckerman in response to Listorious

140 characters of advice for a new user?

Twitter is about sharing. Take an interest in others. Don't try to be all about yourself.

RayBeckerman in response to Listorious

What's your best tweet?

"Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter." ~Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.

RayBeckerman in response to Listorious

What do you wish people would do more of on Twitter?

Share. Retweet (traditional retweet, not Twitter's fake pseudo retweet)

RayBeckerman in response to Listorious

What's the most interesting connection you've made through Twitter?

There's no single connection. It's the precious wonderful peeps I've discovered here, who have so much to teach and share

RayBeckerman in response to Listorious

How do you use Twitter in your professional life?

One of the things I tweet about is legal issues. And I'm a lawyer IRL.

RayBeckerman in response to Listorious

What inspires you to tweet?

I love to interact with, share information with, and organize with, people who care about making the world a better place

Questions Asked

What is US Fish & Wildlife's role in connection with the aftermath of the #oilspill ?

(Ray - sorry it took so long to get back to you! We didn't mean to overlook your Q for so long! - USFWS)

Now that the oil has stopped flowing, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is moving to assessing the damage and making sure that all areas are fully restored to pre-spill conditions, at no cost to the American people. The program that enables this is the Natural Resource Damage Assessment and Restoration program, known as NRDAR (spelled out), which was set up following the Exxon Valdez spill to provide a legal authority to address the consequences of oil spills.

The NRDAR process focuses on identifying injured natural resources, determining the extent of the injuries, recovering damages from those responsible, and planning and carrying out natural resource restoration activities to pre-spill conditions.

NRDAR is completely separate from the claims system for individuals and businesses that BP has set up; its purpose is to restore damage to trust resources that are owned by the public, which can include national wildlife refuges, fish hatcheries, military bases, parks, endangered species and their habitats, drinking water supplies, etc. It is also separate from many of the response operations, such as rescuing birds, deploying boom, and cleaning oil from shores and beaches.

You can get more information on NRDAR at http://www.fws.gov/home/dhoilspill/restoration.html
