what should an amateur writer do to become perfect in his/her skills?
In one word, WRITE. To expand on that, write some more. Practice every day. Test your limits constantly.
Find and enter writing contests. Find and attend workshops, webinars, conventions - ask questions and learn.
Immerse yourself in the craft so that you literally LIVE it.
Follow other writers, become friends with other writers.
Oh, and read - read not only your favorite genre, but other genres as well.
Don't be afraid to ask questions - not one single writer was born with the skills - everyone had to start at the beginning.
But, above all - WRITE!
Did I mention . . . WRITE!
