The tweets I find most offensive are those from people I don't follow, generated by bots that have picked up on a word or phrase I've used in tweeting (usually inaccurately)
I'd stop following if someone I followed started to try to sell me stuff by tweeting. I block marketers, etc. as soon as they follow me, but if an existing follower started to do it, I'd seriously consider getting rid of them as well.
The odd 'plug' is ok - I expect that, and it might lead to something of interest, and I don't mind the occasional charity appeal, though even that, if it's done constantly, gets to seem more like someone is spamming me.
