Personally I think Software Testing is a great career to be in. To be a great tester you need to know all the realms of a project. A tester should know all the variations of testing, meaning they should have common knowledge of how to do manual, automation as well as performance testing. A tester should know common terminology as well as standard process. A tester should be able to understand requirements and be able to decompose them. Coding background is great. Don't be afraid to think outside of the box.
