Not really - that's not how it works, is it? Followers aren't badges to wear and it's not a numbers game.
I try and be interesting and honest. It's fun to experiment, too - I'm enjoying using @AudioBoo to squirt audio into Twitter.

I don't shorten any. If I can't write it correctly in 140 characters, I rewrite it. That's my former life as a copywriter haunting me.
Using Twitter to broadcast. Newspapers especially could build loyalty if they interacted with followers, instead of regurgitating headlines.
Don't be shy. Roll your sleeves up and get stuck in. Follow people, ask questions, have an opinion. Share yourself, be honest, have fun.
Tweetdeck on the desktop, Tweetie on the iPhone. Other apps have more bells and whistles, but I like simple.

Not sure I have one. When I travelled around the world using Twitter , I guess it was the tweet that convinced the next person to help me.
